Glasgow Requiem: The Well - Reawakening a Forgotten Source

Hidden deep within the Crypt of Glasgow Cathedral lies one of the city’s oldest treasures – St Mungo’s Well, once central to both pagan and Christian ritual.

Though the well played a pivotal role in Glasgow’s early history, its story has faded from public memory, quietly slipping through the cracks of time.

Yesterday, for the first time in 70 years, the well was excavated by Aproxima, working with Professor Stephen Driscoll, leading archaeologist at Glasgow University and his long-time collaborator David Sneddon of Clyde Archaeology.

This rare live public event offered a chance to witness archaeology in action and to explore the layers of history beneath one of Glasgow’s most sacred sites.

Today we announce that the well will be transformed by a striking yet sensitive artwork created by Aproxima Creative Collective, including acclaimed Scottish artist Joanna Kessel.

To celebrate the rededication of the well, a series of concerts will take place in December at Glasgow Cathedral, showcasing new music by Karine Polwart, Claire M Singer and Cameron Sinclair with live narration by acclaimed actor Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot, Vigil), bringing to life the long-forgotten story of the well.
