Glasgow Requiem: The Well
This October, Aproxima begins a major new chapter in its Glasgow Requiem programme with The Well - a project that reawakens the ancient 13th century well hidden within Glasgow Cathedral.
Once central to Glasgow’s foundation story, the well has lain dormant for centuries in the Cathedral’s crypt. Long associated with healing, pilgrimage and renewal, it is now being reimagined as a contemporary wellspring - a source of connection, reflection and hope for the city and its communities.
On Tuesday 21 October, the well was excavated for the first time in living memory offering the public a rare chance to witness archaeology in action and to explore the layers of history beneath one of Glasgow’s most sacred sites.
In November, the well will be transformed by a new artwork created by Aproxima Creative Collective, including acclaimed Scottish artist Joanna Kessel. To celebrate, a series of concerts will take place in December at Glasgow Cathedral, showcasing new music by Karine Polwart, Claire M Singer and Cameron Sinclair with live narration by acclaimed actor Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot, Vigil), bringing to life the long-forgotten story of the well.
